I closed and reopened the game and my save point had taken because 'Continue' was in white letters, no longer greyed out. You really must use the opportunity while it is there! If you advance the game by just one more step you will likely not be allowed to save again until the end of the next lesson. So it seems likely at my second bash at this game, that you should expect to see periodic 'On-screen' save point options on lesson completion. He said that in Windows you need to take Caps Lock off (press Clear on a Mac) and don't attempt to make a save during a lesson or a battle. Now if at 29th October 2017 you go to page 15 in the comments, there is a similar query which the developer, Sleepy Duck, responded to. OK, I have made a successful save now! I had to finish the first lesson and was presented with an on-screen save option, which I took. If that does not help try also ticking lower down in the Priviledge Level box for 'Run this program as an administrator' but you always need to consider if you really want to do that. You also need to click 'Apply' and 'OK' each time that you make an O.S. then it is down to trial and error, starting with XP Service Pack 3, as programs written a while back may have coding that only works properly if the original OS is selected. Left click on the 'Compatability' tab and left click again in the empty box next to 'Run this program in compatability mode for:'. right click on the exe and select 'Properties' at the bottom of the drop down menu. One thing that sometimes works in other games is to go to the game exe in the folder C:/Program Files (X86)/Steam/steamapps/common/HiraganaBattle/Learn Japanese To Survive - Hiragana Battle.exe.
That does not provide a fix but if the problem is stated as clearly as possible, someone with more knowledge may be able to pitch in. When I open the game again the options are 'New Game' or 'Continue' but the 'Continue' does not work and I suspect it may well be due to the 'automatic save' not working. However concerning saving the Kanji version, you get a clear saving choice there but I do not see similar in the Hiragana options menu, so I conclude that the intention of the program is to do an 'automatic save on close'. I notice that while I can select options at the start, once in the game that ability to go back to the options menu is lost. including the Kanji version from the same vendor, plays and saves OK. I have verified the local files on Steam and my other games.
